Glenglassaugh 30yr 55.1% – a true celebratory malt
I’ll be upfront here. Many folks out there will not have the chance to try this stuff. It’s rare and it’s very expensive. Before you start calling me a Daddy Warbucks I will tell you that I reviewed this dram from a sample. A big, *BIG* thank you goes out to Alan for the sample! Cheers He’bro!
Why am I so excited about a bottle I could never afford? Well, because A) some of you good people out there can swing the squids for a bottle and B) Glenglassaugh is a newly re-opened distillery and if this whisky is any indication as to what we’ll see coming out of their stills & casks, well… let’s say we should all be excited.
On to the whisky!

No, really. I’m not making this up.
Turns out that Smith has been going to Japan to sell his wine since 2003, and a creative director for Pokemon is a big fan of his wines. As a cartoonist, he also loves Smith’s labels; no wonder.

The 118 page full colour book was written by Ian Buxton, a well-known whisky writer and consultant, who has worked with the distillery since March 2008. It records the history of the distillery from its establishment in 1875, through closure and the 2008 acquisition by the Scaent Group and Glenglassaugh’s subsequent refurbishment and re-opening. Many archive photographs are included, together with stunning new photography of the restoration by renowned distillery photographer Ian McIlwain.
The distillery’s MD, Stuart Nickerson, said:

“We believe that Glenglassaugh – A Distillery Reborn will be of interest to our growing international customer base, whisky enthusiasts and local people. It’s a fascinating story, well told, and a handsome book to grace any library. About Glenglassaugh
The Glenglassaugh Distillery is situated on the Banffshire coast in the North-East of Scotland, close to the small village of Portsoy. The distillery was built in 1875 by local businessmen to satisfy the growing global demand for Scotch Malt Whisky and the site was chosen due to its close proximity to a high quality water supply and easy access to the nearby barley fields.
After a visit in the late 1880s, the highly-regarded Victorian commentator Alfred Barnard described Glenglassaugh as “too well known to need any praise.”
More recently, spirit from Glenglassaugh was used primarily in blends such as Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse. In 1986 the then owners mothballed Glenglassaugh as part of wider cutbacks in production and the distillery has remained silent thereafter. In 2008 The Scaent Group of Amsterdam purchased the distillery and have invested more than £1m to recommence operations and to reintroduce to discerning customers the distinctive and high quality attributes of The Glenglassaugh Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Redevelopment
The refurbishment and reopening of the Glenglassaugh Distillery have been managed by Stuart Nickerson, a renowned whisky expert, who was the sole consultant during the acquisition. Nickerson has worked in the Scotch Whisky industry since 1981 with a significant part of his career being with William Grants, where he was Distilleries Director. Previously, he managed Highland Park Distillery, Glenrothes and Glenfiddich Distilleries in succession. He was appointed the new Managing Director of the Glenglassaugh Distillery Company in February 2008.
One of Stuart Nickerson’s first actions was the appointment of Graham Eunson as Distillery Manager, effective from 1st April 2008. Graham joined the Distillery from Glenmorangie where he was Manager of the world famous distillery for the last 12 years. Graham has also worked at Glendronach and Scapa distilleries.
Production at Glenglassaugh was restarted on 24th November 2008 by Rt Hon Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister and the distillery’s MP. Distilling was thus commenced under the guidance of Stuart Nickerson and Graham Eunson and “The Spirit Drink that dare not speak its name™” is the first product released to be made by the new management team.

No name spirit drink launched by Scotch distillery
Not old enough to be Scotch or carry the distillery name, the first release from the reopened Portsoy distillery was called “The Spirit Drink that dare not speak its name”. Now the distillery has released ‘The Spirit Drink that blushes to speak its name’ to celebrate 6 months of production.
The Glenglassaugh Distillery Company released 8,160 individually numbered 50cl bottles of a 50% abv spirit drink under the title “The Spirit Drink that dare not speak its name”. This was the first new product from the distillery since it reopened under new management in 2008 after being mothballed for 22 years.

Malt Advocate Whisky Awards Announces Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey as
“Artisan Whisky of the Year”
DENVER – Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey™, a distinctive small-batch whiskey cultivated in Colorado’s first-ever micro-distillery, has been named “2009 Artisan Whisky of the Year” by the Malt Advocate Whisky awards.
The Malt Advocate Whisky Awards exist to recognize excellence in the world of whiskey. Now in its sixteenth year, the program is the oldest and longest-running annual whiskey awards program, honoring the world’s greatest whiskies and distilleries, and the individuals behind them.
The 16th annual Malt Advocate Whisky Awards will be presented in the spring 2010 issue of the Malt Advocate magazine. To be eligible for this year’s awards, products must have been sold in the U.S. during the 2009 calendar year.
According to Malt Advocate Publisher John Hansell in the Malt Advocate blog, Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is a great example of an artisan whisky that rivals well-established scotch or bourbon distillers in quality.
As an all-malt product, Hansell remarks that Stranahan’s resembles a single malt scotch in many ways, with a unique flair and a hint of bourbon character. He further remarked that the whiskey shows nice maturity, as well as smoothness with a layered sweetness and a good grip of tobacco and polished leather on the finish. “An example of the right way to do artisan distilling,” Hansell concluded.
Setting a new classification for whiskey, Stranahan’s unique distilling techniques blend the processes used to make both Scotch and Bourbon whiskeys in order to produce a straight Rocky Mountain whiskey that is sweeping the nation, as well as awards.
Stranahan’s Wins Award
Other awards include Best Small Batch Distillery Whiskey of the Year by Jim Murray’s Whiskey Bible 2009, Best of Show at the 5th Annual American Distilling Institute Conference, inclusion in The History Channel’s Modern Marvels “Whiskey” program which toured distilleries from around the world, and more.
Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is available in select markets and is also available at the distillery. For more information, visit www.stranahans.com
